Tekeningen ontstaan naast het schilderkunstig oeuvre. Zij komen tot stand tijdens verblijven in het buitenland – Toscane, de Abruzzen ... – maar ook in het atelier, als deel van het onderzoeksproces bij de voorbereiding van schilderijen. Het materiaal is doorgaans Oostindische inkt of houtskool. Uit dit werk blijkt een voorkeur voor het niet getemde natuurlijke landschap en het complexe ruimtelijke decor. De vormenchaos inspireert tot een grafisch experiment, waarin gestreefd wordt naar een krachtig visueel beeld. In sommige reeksen tekeningen blijft de band met de visuele werkelijkheid achterwege en ontstaat een abstracte beeldtaal. In beide expressievormen speelt een gevoel voor ruimtelijkheid een sterke rol.

Series of drawings form the other part of Filip Fierens’ artistic work. They are made during stays abroad – Tuscany, Abruzzo ...– but in the studio as well, as part of the research process prior to painting. Mostly made with Indian ink, these drawings show a preference for the untamed natural landscape and its intricate decor. Their chaos of forms inspired him to create a graphic experiment, in which he strives for a powerful visual image. In some series of drawings the connection with reality is omitted and an abstract visual language is created. A strong sense of spaciousness is present in both forms of expression.
